Science is the glue which connects all knowledge. Without knowing the basic concepts and skills of science, no matter how much else you know, your intellectual and analytical development will remain incomplete and so will your ability to embark on meaningful careers which require versatility and the facility to think on your feet.
You will also be limiting your job options settling for the transient, time being jobs. This will also hold true even if you ended up in the business sector as an MBA or the like or in the IT sector where the ability to sift and sort knowledge will be more useful than merely processing it without understanding it. Also as our society gets more and more isolated from science even lawyers and accountants will be better of knowing science so they will be more aware of the various litigations, their causalities and limitations as well as their cost and validity.
Furthermore, our evolving society, whether global or not, is now requiring not as many specialists as generalists who have a grasp of the multifaceted problems facing our society. You leave out science from your background you leave out the major sector of our society where all of the future growth is likely to center.
Universities and colleges used to be the places where you could learn rather broad based science. But that was until about the mid fifties or the mid sixties of the past century. Since then they have become more of a research institutions than teaching institutions cutting down or altogether eliminating key science courses especially their hands-on lab component. This they did to free faculty time to be devoted to research at the expense of teaching. Consequently not only the students are hurting, even the graduates with research background are not versatile enough to move between projects and disciplines.
This in the long run hurts the employers also who keep complaining about the problem without coming to its resolution.
For these and many other reasons, the Science Skills Center as a center for teaching not fragmented but integrated science was established. Its main task, in addition to integrating science so to produce more versatile thinkers and workers is also to educate the masses in matters of science enhancing their now almost non existent science literacy, understanding, competency and complacency.
The Science Skills Center performs these functions via offering integrated hands-on science workshops, science projects and courses – for listings click here...
